Another Amazing video from Dakar.

The Dakar Rally is a supreme human exploit whose history has been written in the heart of some of the world’s most stunning deserts and belongs to the world of the greatest sporting challenges of our time. Both a motor race and an orienteering challenge, the Dakar Rally pits some of the world’s greatest offroad drivers against amateur competitors, for whom the race is often the culmination of their dreams and who come to take up the challenge with their motorcycles, quad bikes, cars and trucks. Participants of more than fifty nationalities come together every year for this race where competition and help go hand in hand, which is watched on television by over a billion viewers in 190 countries.
A first-rate sports competition:

More than just a simple question of racing and speed, the Dakar requires off-piste navigational skills and consistency. In off-road races, endurance prevails and the slightest mistake costs dearly. This combination of physical toughness and technical performance has attracted champions from different horizons for thirty five years who are all keen to measure themselves against each other and tackle this outstanding event.

A human adventure:

Like the mountains or the oceans, the wide open spaces inspire “the adventurers”. Entering the Dakar is, in a certain way, like climbing Everest, sailing round the globe or rowing round the world. The places on the final podium represent an exceptional challenge, sometimes that of a lifetime.

Apart from the standings, all the competitors are motivated by this resolute desire, an almost crazy dream. Whether they are motorcyclists, car drivers or truckers, or quad riders, they all share this ambition, a feeling that brings them together. The tradition of solidarity, a principle which is one of the pillars of the “Dakar Spirit”, stems from this shared passion: despite the linguistic barriers, on this level the competitors all speak the same language.

An international event:

Founded in Africa, where it built up its legend, the Dakar is by nature attracted to the unknown. The Sahara fascinated competitors for almost thirty years, but now the Dakar is exploring another continent, South America, with an unfailing will to surprise. Having become an international event, which gathers together men and women of 50 different nationalities, the Dakar draws on a thirst for interaction and the open-mindedness of its competitors, who all crave to explore the deserts of the world and to push themselves to the limit.

2014 event will be hold on Jam-5-2014 ~ Jan-18-2014

travis-climbing-at-cijin-2

The Myriad Wanderings 2013

So since last time we climbed with Travis the American soldier who serviced in Afghanistan and now lives in Taiwan, he had found something special to explore on the Cijin Island.

According to his blog he climbed the lighthouse to have a better view from the Island. And the view is not that bad as he said, no picture to prove it tho. But we are sure he did put a great show for locals that day!

Travis wrote some quality articles about his adventure in Taiwan. Most of the stories are fun and excited. You can visit his blog for more reads.

Climber Ammon McNeely Almost Loses Leg In BASE Jump Accident

Climber Ammon McNeely Almost Loses Leg In BASE Jump Accident

Ammon Mcneely is best known for his incredible record of big wall climbing but he’s also a keen BASE jumper, and it seems that this constant risk taking has caught up with him. He was jumping in the Moab area of Utah (with Sketchy Andy of EpicTV fame) and delayed slightly too long when opening his parachute, and when he did get it open he swung 180 degrees back into the cliff he’d just jumped off. He slid down and stopped on a ledge. Luckily he was with some good climbers and they were able to reach him and get him down to the ground and in a safe spot for a helicopter evacuation.

It looks like Ammon may need to have his foot amputated but it seems that he might just get away with it, despite it apparently being held on with a sliver of skin. His quick thinking in applying a tourniquet will have helped but he still reckons he lost 3 pints of blood and infection will remain a risk for a while yet.

Ammon is a legend of US big walling, and it known as the “El Cap Pirate” due to his rough, piratical nature. He’s climbed El Capitan 75 times by 61 routes, including many speed records and first one day ascents. Specifics aside, he’s known as one of the toughest climbers out there, and his understated description of this latest accident will no doubt enhance this reputation.

“I’m just always pushing myself, ambling into that tiny realm in space where badass stops and dumbass begins.”

“So, the question is; Do we stand up and take the risks and have a blast enjoying your passion? Or, do we hide in the shadows, being afraid of what might happen if we are so bold to follow our dreams?”

2 Bolts next to each other, 兩個再一起的BOLT

Devra worknig hard on Teamwork route, Devra 在 Teamwork 路線上努力

“No clip the next one” That’s what I’ve heard at Londgong Golden Valley.

Strange commend between climber and belayer isn’t it? It’s even stranger when you have 2 bolts next to each other just like the picture shown above. But yes it’s there, it’s real, and it is how it looks like when you climbing in Taiwan at Golden Valley now. And that’s why we start this “Debolting Project” (previous named as bolt chopping) to prevent climbers clip the wrong bolt and more sadly injured themselves.

But there was a drama around Taiwan Climbing Community about the debolt project. People afraid of us doing bad things at Longdong, but since we talked with the local’s even some of them are coming out to debolt with us.

Locals Helping us out, 來自台灣朋友的幫助

DSC_5666

Chris..errrrrr…., Chris

Today we didn’t do much since the weather doesn’t suit for climbing either. But we manage to chop more bolts then we were with local’s help. He brought an exact same Grinder as we have and recommended us using thinner cutter blade. Also his Grinder’s battery match the one we have. So that means less battery run (we have to charge the battery for 40mins at the entrance of Londong which is 30mins of walk), more time one the rock, and more bolts chopped.

But sadly the rain drops around 3pm, we have to pack and leave the place. At the end of the day we are so happy for what we have done and stop for pizza on our way back to Taipei. J

Again we are welcome anyone who are willing to join us and bring good to Taiwan Climbing Community.
